Jul 21,  · If you really want to get a feel for the pulse of a place, one of my favorite travel tips is to spend a few hours sitting in a park or on a busy street corner by yourself just watching day to day life happen in front of you. Slow down your train of thought and pay close attention to the details around you.

You can read and talk and think, gazing out the window as the world literally passes you by. Pretty much everything is beyond your control.

One of the incredible side-effects of doing retreats 3 times a year with my startup is that I get the opportunity to travel and experience completely different cultures.. On top of spending a week and a half with the rest of the Buffer team on retreats, in the last two occasions I have made a decision to stay or continue traveling in the same area beyond the end of the retreat.

Eat at the bar or in a restaurant with communal tables and you could be mixing with the locals in no time. Be obvious. Place your camera, travel guide, or map on the table, making it obvious that you're a tourist.
